FSCC spikers post No. 2 GPA in NJCAA for 2012-13

FORT SCOTT, Kan. -- At the beginning of the 2012 season, the Fort Scott Community College volleyball team set a goal to win a national championship in the classroom. Finishing with a cumulative 3.6 GPA, they knew that they would finish very high.
Tuesday, the NJCAA announced that the Lady 'Hounds finished second in the nation behind Central Community College-Columbus who finished with a 3.61 GPA. The Greyhounds were .01 away from achieving their goal.
FSCC's Rienbolt earns school's top sophomore award

FORT SCOTT, Kan. -- Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds sophomore guard Pierce Rienbolt has been named Outstanding Sophomore of the Year at the school for the 2012-13 school year.
Reinbolt was a member of the FSCC men's basketball team for two years and also a member of the Greyhounds Marching Band. He was named to the KJCCC All-Academic team for the 2011-2012 season and also was selected as Homecoming King in the fall of 2012.
Jewett earns Coach of the Year honor from MIAA peers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Pittsburg State University men's track coach Russ Jewett and Lincoln University's women's coach Victor Thomas have been named the Outdoor Track and Field Coaches of the Year by the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Jewett receives the award after leading the Gorillas to its second consecutive conference outdoor title and the program's ninth MIAA outdoor title overall.

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team fell victim to a five-run inning from 8th-ranked Central Missouri and the Lions ended their season Friday, losing 7-3 to the Mules in the 2013 NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament.
Southern (34-22) started the game with a run in the top of the first when Sam Ryan drove in Michael McCoy for the game's first run.
Lions' starter Drew Noble threw well and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He left the game in the eighth and picked up the loss to fall to 7-4 on the season. He threw seven innings, striking out three, and allowing just two hits and two earned runs.
MSSU volleyball coach Knight relieved of duties

JOPLIN, Mo. -- Missouri Southern Director of Athletics Jared Bruggeman announced Monday that volleyball coach Trish Knight has been relieved of her coaching duties, effective immediately, according to a press release from the school.
Knight was 5-55 in two seasons as the head coach for the Lions after coming from Division I Texas Tech University.
Squeeze sends No. 5 Mavericks past MSSU in baseball regional

MANKATO, Minn.-- The Missouri Southern baseball team played a school-record 14 innings and Brett Abell tied a school record with 11 innings pitched, but a safety-squeeze in the bottom of the 14th, lifted fifth-ranked Minnesota State over the Lions, 1-0, in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament Thursday night.
The Lions (34-21) picked up a stellar pitching performance from Abell as the senior from Miami, Okla., went 11 innings, striking out 11, allowing just five hits, and walking two to earn the no-decision.
Southern to face Minnesota State in Central Regional

JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team has been named the sixth seed in the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament which will be hosted by Minnesota-State Mankato.
The Lions (34-20) will face off with Minnesota State (35-8) as the Mavericks earned the No. 1 seed after winning the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament. The game is scheduled for Thursday, May 16 at 7 p.m.
