No. 16 Southern wins third straight overtime game

Keane_Thomann-MSSUJOPLIN, Mo. -- The 16th-ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team played its third-straight overtime game at home and just like the previous two, came away with a win as the Lions took out Fort Hays State, 80-73 Saturday in double-overtime at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (22-5, 14-5 MIAA) is now just a half-game out of first place in the MIAA as Central Missouri defeated Northwest Missouri State in Maryville.

Keane Thomann led all scorers with 28 points on 11-25 shooting from the field and 6-8 from the free-throw line. Jason Adams scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds and seven assists as he moved into second-place all-time on the scoring list at Southern. The senior now has 1,919 points, passing Carl Tyler to move into second.

Thomas Robinson-KU MBkBLAWRENCE, Kan. -- Junior Thomas Robinson's team-high 16 points led the University of Kansas men's basketball team to an 83-50 rout of the Texas Tech Red Raiders Saturday night in Allen Fieldhouse. Robinson shot 60 percent on the night and chipped in a career-high five assists as the Jayhawks cruised to victory.

KU is now 22-5 overall and 12-2 in the Big 12 Conference while the Red Raiders dropped to 8-18 overall and 1-13 in league play.

The shots were falling for Kansas, as the home team shot 56.3 percent from the field and a blazing 60 percent from behind the three-point arc.

missouri_southern_logoJOPLIN, Mo. – The Missouri Southern Lions dropped their final home game of the season, 67-58, to the Fort Hays State Tigers Saturday afternoon inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

The Lions (7-18, 3-16 MIAA) and Tigers (19-7, 11-7 MIAA) played a close first half until a layup by sophomore Shatara Stone tied the game at 13-13 at the 12:19 mark and on the next trip down the floor junior Dysyan Malone would hit a layup and get the harm to give the Lions a three point lead, 16-13, with 11:53 to play in the half.

Southern would dominate the rest of the half pushing their lead up to 10 points, 29-19, on a pair of free throws by Stone with just under two minutes left in the first stanza.

psugorilla-smallTOPEKA, Kan. -- Mitchell Martin led three Washburn players in double figures with 16 points as the Ichabods pulled away in the second half for an 81-63 victory over Pitt State Saturday (Feb. 18) at Lee Arena.

Washburn (19-7, 13-5 MIAA) led 30-24 at halftime against Pitt State (14-12, 10-9 MIAA) but the Ichabods quickly built a double-digit lead in the second half and never looked back.

Will McNeill added 14 points and Bobby Chipman finished with 13 points for the Ichabods, who shot 50.0 percent (29-for-58) from the floor in the game.

Joe Ragland-WSU MBkBDAVIDSON, N.C. -- Senior Joe Ragland recorded a game-high 30 points and seven rebounds as No. 24 Wichita State beat Davidson, 91-74, Saturday in a Sears BracketBuster match-up at John Belk Arena.

The Shockers led by as many as 23 points in the second half in the win that improved Wichita State's record to 24-4 overall.

The victory also gave Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall his 300th career win.

Ragland scored 18 of his points in the second half, as the Shockers posted their highest points total since a 102-53 win against Newman Dec. 19.

psugorilla-smallTOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 15 Washburn Lady Blues scored the game's first 16 points, riding the red-hot streak to a 59-45 victory over No. 8 Pittsburg State Saturday (Feb. 18) at Lee Arena.

The win helps the Lady Blues (23-4, 16-2 MIAA) pull within a half-game of the Gorillas (23-3, 17-2 MIAA) atop the MIAA standings.

Pitt State closes out conference against with a Wednesday (Feb. 22) road trip against Fort Hays State, while Washburn has match-ups against Emporia State Wednesday and Lincoln next Saturday (Feb. 25).

Angel Rodriguez-K-State vs Baylor actionWACO, Texas -- Junior Jordan Henriquez blocked Quincy Miller’s go-ahead shot with two seconds remaining, as Kansas State held on to post a 57-56 win over No. 10 Baylor before a sellout crowd at the Ferrell Center on Saturday afternoon.

The win snapped a two-game skid and gave the Wildcats (18-8, 7-7 Big 12) their second Top 10 win of the season and the seventh of head coach Frank Martin’s five-year career.  His seven Top 10 wins passed Jack Hartman (six) for the second-most in school history and now trail just Naismith Hall of Famer Tex Winter (10).  Martin now has 19 Top 25 wins in his tenure, including seven away from home.

Freshman Angel Rodriguez and junior Rodney McGruder paced the K-State attack with 15 points each, while senior Jamar Samuels and Henriquez added nine points each.
